Let’s get silly. Dang
-le
our participles
out for all to see
scribble with glee
in purple-periwinkle pen
abandon the laws.of;punk
tu-a,tion and then
toss it all to the wind
and begin again.
Let’s get stupid. Forget
we know
the rules, grind
the grammar police into
proper dust, trust our
instincts instead,
toss all doubt and dread
into the ditch, forget
which verb is which,
and make our words
jiggle
wiggle
giggle
dance
fly
fling
sing.
Let’s get serious. About
smiling. And laughing
and whiling away the hours
with our rambunctious pens,
uncapping ourselves and
inking naked through the
trees, allowing the breeze
to let us flowblowknow
these things and more…
after all, isn’t that what
we started writing for?
Inspired by the poem “Dance Stupider” by Hannah Stephenson, via a prompt over at Poetry Mixtape:

Wow! A verbal tour de force that begs to be posted at virtualpoetryreading.com (951-665-8161). Now I know what a whimsygizmo is. Thanks Ms DeLightful
“with our rambunctious pens,
uncapping ourselves and
inking naked through the
trees”
LOVE this bit! 🙂
Um no. Let’s not write “stupider.” But let’s do the rest, like:
“whiling away the hours
with our rambunctious pens,
uncapping ourselves and
inking naked through the
trees” … definitely my favorite part 🙂
I do not write to get stupid. I do it to feel free and expressed, relieved of too-much self inside
my chest, eager to be milked for the thirsty.
Shawna, even your comments are poems. 🙂
This was born not only of the piece that inspired it (“Dance Stupider”), but also of the rebel in me wanting to shed her i-am-bic-pen-tam-e-ter skin, and maybe someday begin to not care that she has no idea what the heck some of the more scholarly poetic prompts and poets out there are talking about (WTH are spondees and trochees?) 😉
I’ll spondee your trochee. 😉
[When in doubt, insert a tone of innuendo. It works every time. Almost.]
“wanting to shed her i-am-bic-pen-tam-e-ter skin” …
Really? Could I find you any more
irresistible, less resistible, more
delectable
in this bowl full of words
you’ve birthed
just for me
and maybe another somebody,
nobody, peabody, anybody
who reads between your
lines?
🙂
Seems like they could be used for nature copy, as well…as in “ah, the trochees are spondee again. good to see after such a sparse mating season last year.” 😉
That would be a great name for a blog: I-am-bic-pen has a ring to it.
SO MANY amazing parts to this one, De!! I’m loving…
abandon the laws.of;punk
tu-a,tion and then
toss it all to the wind
and the especially the part about trusting our instincts…
All such great writing, De!!
This should be illustrated and shared as a book to inspire us when we don’t feel the writing juice flowing. I LOVE this! 😀
“Punk-tuation” is too good!! I love that invented word.
Nice to “meet” you…I look forward to reading more of your work.
Nice to meet you, too, Hannah. I loved the original poem, and enjoyed what it brought out. 😉 Thanks so much for stopping by.
Thank you, everyone. 🙂
Great response! Glad to expose more people to Hannah’s wonderful work!
