Where are you from?
……….How to answer this,
since she is born one place, living another
(with two handfuls in between)
versus soul longing for a shore
……….she is not from, but
of.
Between here and there
beyond her frail flesh, bone
behind this desert backdrop
within this earth-toned zone
without sea, she can only be lead
by fingers scanning Braille sand grains
for answers,
underneath it all, still mostly feeling
like a visitor
in her own skin.

Ahhh… love this! So much detail & information & emotion tangled into tiny little prepositions. And WHY am I here reading when I should be writing?? Should never read first — too intimidating — gotta go!! :-O
Oh my God, you have written my theme song. I too love and live not close enough to the sea…….love the sand in Braille…….I too “of” and not from the sea…I, too, feeling like a visitor in my own skin away from it.
Wow. Your words went straight to my heart like a cool drink in the desert.
Such a heart-fully writ comment, Sherry!
De, I’m agreeing about this poem and especially this on sand braille…
“without sea, she can only be lead
by fingers scanning Braille sand grains
for answers,”
This is SO AMAZING!
Loved this, both the cleverness and the heart.
This thoughtful and beautifully paced work. Fine piece of writing.

Very nicely crafted work, thoughtful and beautifully faced. Fine piece of writing.
a fine poem, I can really identify with mostly feeling
like a visitor
in her own skin.
and I love the image of fingers scanning Braille sand grains
for answers
“like a visitor in her own skin” … Nice!
This screams, De: “she is not from, but of”
Wow, thanks, all. So much.
Very nice…I specially like the last lines too ~

Cleverly written but also with a lot of heart
This is how I felt when I first moved to the Sonora Desert. It took me two years to acclimate; and now after nearly twenty, I cannot imagine living any where else. We evolve, don’t we?
Yes, many great lines, especially the Braille one. I’ve lived in 6 different places and only one is truly home… (not the one I live in now)…
Thank you all, so much.
