the topography of time

here’s your hat
…………………………………but what’s your hurry?
won’t you hang
it for awhile
……………………….on the corner of my
……………………………………smile,
……..follow these
………….lost beats
………….and
broken roads
as your heart’s map
………………………..folds me home.

  1. I LOVE this!!! Especially the first half. 🙂 I heart it to pieces! (I first typoed this as “I hear tit …” I thought you should know. Perhaps an afternoon chuckle is in order.)

I cannot tell you how much I adore this:
“here’s your hat but what’s your hurry? won’t you hang it for awhile on the corner of my smile” … That is PRECIOUS!!!

…is where you hang your hat…good as always…ending is my fav, folding heart/map

  3. Jeannine Bergers Everett says:

*sigh* your heart’s map folds me home…so lovely

  4. Carrie says:

That last line…so beautiful. Nice job

Thank you, Carrie. I love strong verbs, and I read a friend’s poem today with “fold” in it. I knew I wanted it, and folding the map is an idea I’ve always imagined and loved. Thank you so much for stopping by.

  5. Annabelle says:

I too loved the bit about hanging your hat on the corner of a smile; just lovely!

  6. Sarav says:

It’s unanimous, love that phrase “hang your hat on the corner of a smile” so clever! Also love the comfort of that last line, makes me want to go cuddle up 🙂

  7. Paula J says:

Every bit of it is delightful. I’m not a poet, so I am curious as to how a poet thinks when writing. Do you think in those poetic rhythms and phrases? Or do you think in prose and then translate? Just wondering?

    • whimsygizmo says:

Thank you, Paula. I think this might be a bit like asking a writer, like you, where you get your ideas from. I can only speak for myself, but these things have a life of their own. For me, word bump is a biggie…for some unknown reason, a couple of words will bump together in my brain, and I’ll like them and won’t be able to get them out of my head, except to expel them to paper. Or in the case of this piece, a visual idea. I have always thought it would be nice to be able to just take the map and fold it over, and be closer to the ones, or the places, you love. After that, all kinds of “home” phrases poured in…”hang your hat,” “he followed me home,” and of course, the where the heart is idea. Since I knew I only wanted to use exactly 33 words, the rest flowed around those thoughts pretty easily. 🙂 Thanks so much for stopping by. I clicked your blog, but no new recent post. Why not? Get to writin’, and leave me a link. 😉

  8. Oh my goodness. De!! I feel like this….I do…because I was just allowing myself at least one of your poems to read and love….I feel hurried, a lot and I haven’t written today so…well you know me.

Know I love you and your poetic heart!

Hannah-Boo. I will take a one-hit visit from you ANY TIME. I know how crazy things are for you right now. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you taking the time. Be sure to take time for YOU, too, lady. To breathe. To write. To BE.

  9. Lumdog says:

I love how “…as your heart’s map…folds me home”. is so inviting. The whole poem is so whimsical. Pun intended. Nice write.

  10. I love your trippy, dizzy lilt-o-wheel style. This piece is perfection from start to finish. Thanks for playing with us again. Be sure to get on back for the new prompt tomorrow, we need more of your words!

  11. On the hat: “Hang it for a while on the corner of my smile.” PLEASE! God, De, you kill me with your concoctions. It’s the way you let loose the rules and simply allow it to spill forth, and it’s always beautiful. I love this. Amy
