Poem for Sale

Do I hear a dollar?
Just give me a holler
and a crisp green George…

What’s that? You’re broke?
Down on your luck? Well,
if you’ve got no buck, per
-haps a quarter?

Ah, I see. The cupboard’s
bare. Well, brother,
can you spare a dime?

Or before the daylight’s
……done,
perhaps just a minute
or two of your time…

Okay, hey! Here’s a poem
for free.

……Anyone? Anyone?

No matter how good they are, most poems must be free. One should really just be glad she doesn’t have to pay people to read her poems, since even avid readers don’t typically tend to care for poetry.

To me, the hidden message sits in the indentations. You’re saying you feel “done,” and you’re asking yourself if you are really anyone at all.

Use your words.
