Give us your poor,
your proud, your purplest
mountains and most amber shades
of day. Give us your periwinkle, puce,
your silver-gray, longing to be free,
and framed.
Brush my skin
in 47 hues of
brightest boldest
mutest blue, a slew
of verdant vein; a strain
of eggplant, too.
Or if itโs the fabulousness
of fragility you crave,
might we suggest
something in an elegant
eggshell,
ecru?

Into shades of purple today, are you? ๐
Very hot to patch our quilts or clothes or souls from such a swatch book. Love it.
(Depending, of course, on what we start with in each case.)
Every hue of purple…every royal, lovely lavender.
I have read a few times to figure out which ‘choices’ there are. Perhaps there are the choices of colors? Am I correct, or did I miss the point?
Yes. Thus the title, Swatches (color choices). ๐ We have so many choices in life, including how we color it.
Ha Nice play on the song American the beautiful and with colors. I am wondering how you got 47.
The fragile off white there in the end made me chuckle. You making a statement there?
Oh this is so visually lovely, and I love the patterning after the anthem, very clever.
Brilliant…your rhyme and use of words and sound…color! I love all the color! ๐
I choose them all! (Though I won’t wear them all at once. ๐ )
Oh! Such a brilliant take on the prompt ๐ indeed we have the choice the paint our life in colors bright or dull. Loved it ๐
I love that ending – it reads so well! I imagine there is a lot below the surface here — as in a statement about immigration!
yes choices of colors…lovely…
I love both the humour and stinging satire in this poem – unique and glorious! (as always)..
The painter’s dilemma.
I love the blues and the purples myself! Loved this!
S-watches. So are you watching S, or is she watching you? ๐
Brilliant opening: “Give us your pour.” This S must be colorful and painty. And I really think she runs on a different sort of time-clock. Maybe even space-clock.
“proud” = “pro out”
“shades” = “S-Hades”
“periwinkle” = “pee-wry-wink-all”
“puce” = “pee you see”
This really is the most gorgeous hair: “your silver-gray, longing to be free” … Just give it up and be natural, even if you’re aging. Be yourself!!!
I love this: “Brush my skin
in 47 hues of
brightest boldest
mutest blue”
I’m insane over the last stanza. But why do I walk away feeling like you’re begging me to join an cult of artists? Don’t you know I’m a solo kind of gal? ๐
The paint swatches of 60+ years ago had the primary colors plus a variety of greens and browns and many shades of white! Painters in those days fiddled with the colors to suit the clients. The art form now is in the name not the color!
