Were they thrones,
shaped for greater kings;
tablets,
commandments raised for lesser
souls; tombstones
to honor the past, templates
for tomorrow?
Granite soldiers, standing
at attention, saluting another
……………………………sunrise?
Ancient billboards,
pre-
Burma
-Shave?
Did they stave off giants,
offer altars to gods with no names?
Did they contain secrets etched
for patient wanderers? Perhaps
they were simply a giant Jenga game,
abandoned. Or,
like most creations, were they merely
pleasing to the artist’s eye, casting
just the right glance of slant and
…….shadow
……….to a waiting sky.
