Swallowing Sun

“Sunshine cannot bleach the snow, Nor time unmake what poets know.”
– Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing…” – John Ruskin

..
It breaks,
this day. Open,
like an egg. In golden strings,
strummed as song.

I gulp and grapple
between beauty
and duty. Wonder
when I might simply
slide a lemonyellow
slice upon my tongue.

It flees,
this breeze. Broken
in its own shell. We tell it stories,
and it carries them far.

A saffron lollipop of
longing, an unmelting
sorrow. A song bubble.
An orange rind, wound
’round. A portal for
dragons.

..

Yes. I was already in the middle of writing this one, when I wrote the one that was supposed to be unlike myself, a surprise. Therefore “don’t say saffron” snuck in that one. 😉 Also I think I used saffron a week or so ago. It was fun to write unlike myself yesterday. I might try it again today.

  5. What is it about the sun that makes its light so appetizing? One day, we must have a Sol Potluck. ♥

What a skip and a song – it is hard to choose my favourite image – but i think the saffron lollipop wins!

  7. She says:

What a crazy-awesome image … you, trying to swallow the sun, but then it “breaks” on the way down. Well duh; it’s too big, silly. 🙂 But that you are ambitious enough to try, says a whole lot about you!

    “I gulp and grapple
    between beauty
and duty.” … Holy cats, I love this. Also “duty, one dear.” Mine is particularly difficult at times. 😉 Don’t even get me started on the past two days …

    “when I might sim/ply
    slide a lemonyellow
slice upon my tongue” … You are so good!

“lemonyellow” note: So I love that you just have one “y” in the middle, but to me, it goes with both words; I read it as “lemony yellow.” But it made me think of this hilarious thing I do when I read/write poems: Any time I see a consonant-double (stacked or whatever), I read it as a bra size. So now I’m imaging a double-Y bra. 🙂

    “A saffron lollipop of
    longing, an unmelting
sorrow. A song bubble.” … In my head, I am dancing around in the yard in pigtails, jumping in puddles to THIS magic. Even though you stuck in the word “sorrow,” it’s just sandwiched in so much joy that I don’t even care about the sad stuff!

“A portal for dragons” … Your brain. Have I mentioned that it makes me swoon?!

  8. Sumana Roy says:

such a beauty & i can so relate to “I gulp and grapple between beauty and duty.”

  9. A portal for
    dragons…… yes!

So that is where the dragons got their fiery breathe from! How it helps to be in love with the natural world to express its feelings in this way.
