Star Extinction

Had they been placed closer,
we would have used them up
by now, hacked off pieces for
our pleasure, stored up self
-ish shelved treasures of shine.

We would have shattered
them, scattered them far and
wide, found a way to profit
from their luster; busted
them right open to see what
was at center.

Are they edible? Can we smoke
them? If we sprinkle them in
sea water, will we live for light
years? Can’t we smear them
on our ceilings to keep away
the fears?

Yes, it’s a good thing You
pierced them wide, and far.
Who knows what man would
have paid for
