Aubade for the A.M.

Morning breaches
too soon, and the moon bids
us farewell. That tangerine swell
from the east says night has fallen
to the other side,
pried its dark hands from
this horizon.

We sway north,
question our own salt,
and pepper the sky with
silence.

  1. Oh my, I just took a deep breath, inhaling such a peace-filled moment in the midst of so much chaos. Every single words just sings in my soul.

  2. Waltermarks says:

Sunrise comes too soon very often. I like it, if it could just start an hour or three later. Still, I’m the first one up (excluding the cat), for quite a while and I like peppering the day with silence for a while, love that reference

  3. sanaarizvi says:

“We sway north, question our own salt, and pepper the sky with silence” … absolutely breathtaking!❤️

  4. frankhubeny says:

I liked that second part. The idea of peppering the sky with silence is intriguing.

  5. lillian says:

So much that is wonderful in these 44 words. Especially I like
    “That tangerine swell
from the east says night has fallen
    to the other side,
    pried its dark hands from
    this horizon.”
…and yes, peppering the sky with silence! Sometimes, that’s the only way.

  6. Grace says:

Morning comes too soon ~ Love the ending lines De ~

  7. Truedessa says:

The whole poem is lovely, but the second part really touched me.

  8. Janice says:

This is beautiful. ‘Morning breaches’ is new for me and effective. I like how you used salt and pepper between two phrases at the end.

  9. The early sunrise – so perfect for a summer solstice. The perfect moment for silence

  10. kim881 says:

Due to my early rising, this is a regular scene that greets me, De, and you have captured is so gorgeously in the lines:
    ‘…That tangerine swell
from the east says night has fallen
    to the other side’.
    My favourite lines:
    ‘question our own salt,
    and pepper the sky with
    silence’.

  11. NJ says:

    That tangerine swell
from the east says night has fallen
    to the other side

    Loving these lines.

  12. Laura Bloomsbury says:

You bade the night adieu with a marvellously painted aubage (had to look up meaning) – peppered with sheer poetry

  13. Kathy Reed says:

Yes, a great poem for Solstice and the prompt of ‘pepper’;)

  14. Love, “the tangerine swell” and pried its dark hands from the horizon. Great images here!

  15. qbit says:

The last stanza is just beautiful.

  16. That quiet time before sunrise, when even the birds fall silent. Well captured!

  17. Olga says:

Poetry of nature at its best. ❤
