Running Against the Wind

Just gotta put one foot in front
of the other,
take another step
pull another breath
find another song.

Just gotta listen to the trees,
they know things
feet can’t know
lungs can’t swallow
sky can’t tell.

Just gotta know you’re whole
within the struggle,
know the wings
are coming, and you’ve
been in flight, all along.

“Just gotta put one foot in front
of the other” … I love how this brilliant line break makes “the other” another person, as if you’re tripping someone. 🙂 Or just trying to get ahead of another person. I guess it makes it feel like a race or competition. In fact, I often think of my inside people as “others.” So for me, this could very well be about trying to get one voice out while keeping another pushed back. Does that make sense? Even just being bipolar, there are at least two sides vying to speak. Or it could be in marriage, or in friendship.

You probably meant none of that, of course. But I couldn’t help myself.

I really love the format you’ve used, extending the first line of each stanza beyond the following three lines. It makes the rhythm really cool and songlike, or even jumprope chantlike. In fact, there IS a chant/song/commercial coming to mind. What is that? What am I thinking of? Maybe it’s from a movie. Aladdin!!!

Only, it’s “one jump …” not “one foot …” 🙂

Anyway, back to the poem …

    These are incredible and inspiring:

    “take another step
    pull another breath
    find another song”

    “they know things
    feet can’t know
    lungs can’t swallow”

    I miss you. WRITE!!!
