;
takes a seat. Place smells like cigarettes
and stale beer. Love smells like Chanel
No 5 made a new sponsor deal with
desperation; half-packed suitcases
and twice-told secrets. Bartender’s got
an attitude, and he’s fresh
out of gin, tonic,
patience and evens.
After shift he might drink away
his own regrets, but for now he’ll
just
keep
pouring.
Love’s too smart for his bs,
but her defenses are a little down
today, and she bats her eyes with something
akin to both flirtation
and beware. The bottom
of the glass is a last-call song,
and she stares at it, tries to learn
some new words, find a better beat.
And the street light on the corner
won’t stop blinking, as if to say
it’s all for naught, that darkness is
inevitable. The fly on the wall’s
the busiest one here, tasting every
-thing they leave behind. Love’s got a war
-torn photo of her favorite son in her left
pocket, but nobody’s asked
about it in a long time, so she
keeps this latest news to her
………………………………………-self.

Poetic Asides April PAD Challenge, day 17. This is the one with all the prompts.
I feel like you wrote it about my pre-married self.
I loved every word. ❤
Who knows, perhaps your pre-married self and my pre-married self sat next to each other in a bar once upon a time. 😉
This made me cry.
Sorry, Girl. Me, too, when writing. Past life nonsense.
Oh man, that is great. Can’t even cut and paste out all the fantastic lines. Blinking light, darkness inevitable, fly on the wall the busiest.
Thank you! 🙂
Spectacular! Is this going to be another poem where I copy some of my favorite lines and end up pasting most of the poem in the comments? Quite possibly.
“Love smells like Chanel

Egads! Nice work. 😉
Thank ya, ma’am. 🙂

That line break after “Chanel” made me think of her. 🙂
Also of “Channel Love” … our belief that love has something to do with what we see on TV.
I adore the hanging semicolon that draws out “aches a seat.”
Don’t you wish you had back the dollars (and energy/ache) you wasted when you were young? Gah, all that money … on NOTHING!!!
