poker-faced moon

..

she’s got an ace up her
sleeve, i can tell.
she’s cast
her spell upon this dark-spade
sky, bluffed just enough
to call us double-down-drowning
in ebony, ivory-cloud, club-snubbed us
the wrong way with glow.
but I’m calling this mine:

loud heart,
diamond shine.

In April, we poem. Today, I’m hosting the Quadrille over at dVerse. Come play!
(Also, I can’t seem to stop writing about the moon.)

You had me at /this dark spade sky/. I like the idea that you worked all the card suits into the fabric of the piece; very lively prompt today.

  2. All the suits and the moon. I don’t play cards and the moon intrigues me here, but it feels right to me, that big bright face seeing all the cards.

  3. Just Barry says:

Lively and vivid descriptions. Loved it.

  4. S says:

    Love you/this, baby — always.

So cool to Lady-Gaga the title. 🙂

Then when I saw the “cast” line break, my head went to “cast of Glee” for some reason. So I’m picturing Lady Gaga as the moon (disco ball showgirl) with the high school choir in some kind of freaky freaky almost club performance. Then maybe you and she tag team it, late, but still right on time. Or maybe she’s got stage fright, so you grab the lonely mike and solo rock out, like it’s your time to shine.

    Gah, that imagination.

  5. Jade Li says:

I love the rhyming and the use of cards, with you holding a diamond shine.

  6. Grace says:

Such a beautiful diamond shine it is De. Thanks for hosting.

  7. Beverly Crawford says:

Beautiful word wizardry. I think I will never learn the line breaks as used in open verse. For example, your first line brings me up short before I can carry on!!

  8. Nora says:

Love how you folded cards in here for multiple readings.

  9. I like this. I agree with all previous commenters. Thanks for hosting!
