smallish dragons in disguise

they pass themselves off as
flies, having given their fire
to the lightning
bugs and shrugged their
scales for gossamer wings.

but we recognize the spangled
colors of their skin, the way sea
and river call to them. they
dip and sway and pass the
day in bedazzled buzz,

and we know each is a tiny
storm waiting.

One of my favorites of yours. Just charming…

I love this. Funnily enough, I was just thinking of the small space sun dragons I wrote into one of my novels, and am still so in love with them that I cannot rewrite the novel, where they patently don’t belong.
