smallish dragon visits the library

fantasy’s not really
his thing, but he gets fired up
by the true crime. all evidence
suggests he’s

been here before, as some pages
have gone slightly charred, and
others are just missing
(sometimes he gets hungry be
-fore the thing is solved.)

he’s resolved himself to avoid
the shhhhh and so a smallish
muzzle is sometimes necessary,
as he tends to roar out loud
when overly excited.

he’s invited his smallish friends
and they may come in the end
but this morning he’s just perched
alone at the back, wings spread

and pages all akimbo. on a scale
from 1 to 10, he talon-rates them
in the end and burns the numbers
into memory. all forensics and fire

aside, he’d stay all night if they let
him, but Librarian Libby hushed
no last time, and
so Mama Dragon comes to get him.
