morning breaks
us open, and we ponder
dragon-breath clouds and
all that crimson fire.
we’ve already held
these miles between our
teeth and found them too
salty, too muddled-
much for day’s embrace.
the sky’s a quiet place
to trace our last good
-byes.

Linda’s got a great word for us for today’s Quadrille over at dVerse. Come play!

The last stanza!
I love the title, De, and the whole quadrille, and especially your use of enjambment in the opening lines! And the metaphor ‘we’ve already held these miles between our teeth’!
Aubadelicious.
Bittersweet goodbyes are the hardest. Wonderful De.
The dragon breath sky is a wonderful image! Well done.
Love this. In particular, ‘we’ve already held these miles between our teeth’
“Morning breaks us open” What a different and arresting opening!

Hi De, Fun to see you here. Your dragon-breath clouds made me happy. With only 44 words, I’m finding many of mine among these great mornings.
Luv that end shift.
Happy you dropped by to read mine
Much💖love
Beautiful aubade – so poignant with the last goodbyes.
So intense, the parting (breaking open) and their mutually safe space of the sky. Beautiful concept carried out seamlessly.
The title is fantastic and what follows even more so! So much implied in 44 words.
“morning breaks us open…” POW! What a strong open. If this were tennis that would be an ace! Strong piece De… 🙂✌🏼❤️
What a gut-wrenching ending!
I can taste those salty miles! This is so evocative, loved it! 💓
I can feel that good-bye, it feels like the parting has been building over time (as it always does)
Such beauty and sadness in this one, De! Beautiful imagery!
Love the ‘dragon breath sky”!
Oh my goodness…this one blew me away–in a good way!
truly ingenious, De!
